چکیده
This review describes in chronological order the events surrounding the discovery in California of the causal agent of the forest disease known as Sudden Oak Death. We hope it will not only provide the reader with a basic synopsis of what is known about this novel pathosystem, but also relate the human and societal aspects of a unique experience for a group of scientists involved in highly visible research. Phytophthora ramorum: integrative research and management of an emerging pathogen in California and Oregon forests.
Phytophthora ramorum, causal agent of sudden oak death, is an emerging plant pathogen first observed in North America associated with mortality of tanoak (Lithocarpus densiflorus) and coast live oak (Quercus agrifolia) in coastal forests of California during the mid-1990s. The pathogen is now known to occur in North America and Europe and have a host range of over 40 plant genera. Sudden oak de...
متن کاملPhytophthora ramorum in North America
Two apparently unlinked events marked the beginning of one of the most devastating forest diseases known to man in recent times: Sudden Oak Death (SOD). In the mid 1990s, while a novel species of Phytophthora was being isolated from mildly diseased Rhododendron and Viburnum plants in German and Belgian nurseries, the first reports of inexplicable death of tanoaks (Notholithocarpus densiflorus) ...
متن کاملDetection and Quantification of Phytophthora ramorum from California Forests Using a Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction Assay.
ABSTRACT The timely and accurate detection of pathogens is a critical aid in the study of the epidemiology and biology of plant diseases. In the case of regulated organisms, the availability of a sensitive and reliable assay is essential when trying to achieve early detection of the pathogen. We developed and tested a real-time, nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay for the detection of ...
متن کاملEfficacy of phosphonic acid, metalaxyl-M and copper hydroxide against Phytophthora ramorum in vitro and in planta
The ability of metalaxyl-M, phosphonic acid in the form of phosphonate, and copper hydroxide to inhibit different stages in the life cycle of Phytophthora ramorum , the causal agent of sudden oak death (SOD), was tested in vitro using 12 isolates from the North American forest lineage. In addition, experiments were conducted in planta to study the ability of phosphonic acid injections and metal...
متن کاملMicroclimate Impacts Survival and Prevalence of Phytophthora ramorum in Umbellularia californica, a Key Reservoir Host of Sudden Oak Death in Northern California Forests
Phytophthora ramorum, an invasive pathogen and the causal agent of Sudden Oak Death, has become established in mixed-evergreen and redwood forests in coastal northern California. While oak and tanoak mortality is the most visible indication of P. ramorum's presence, epidemics are largely driven by the presence of bay laurel (Umbellularia californica), a reservoir host that supports both prolifi...
